With less than a week to the February 16 general elections, another office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Awka, Anambra state capital, has reportedly been engulfed in wild flames.
Sahara Reporters reports that the saddening fire incident, which occurred on Tuesday, February 12, at INEC office near Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, has led to destruction of electoral material marked for the February 16 election in the state. Legit.ng notes that this would be the third times the offices of the electoral umpire would be subjected to inferno attacks following two previous incidents in Abia and Plateau states.
According to emerging report, sensitive items like card readers were razed down by the fire incident, leaving INEC in dilemma on the possibility of holding election in the state. The cause of the fire has not been determined as officials of the fire service are still trying to put out the fire. The commission has, however, called for improved security for the INEC offices across the country.
